WOODSTOCK IN THE CITY: POETRY OF RESILIENCE AT 92Y TRIBECA

Hey city folk, the Woodstock Film Festival will be in town for a second special screening in May! On the heels of our Annual Soho House benefit, featuring a screening of Peace, Love, & Misunderstanding (which was SOLD OUT), WFF presents the Diane Seligman Award winner for Best Documentary Short at the 2011 Woodstock Film Festival, Poetry of Resilience Wednesday May 9, 7:30pm at 92Y Tribeca, NYC. The film is Academy Award nominee Katja Esson's latest and chronicles the lives and words of six extraordinary poets and is an examination of the ever-present questions of violence, society and the reality of being an artist and survivor.

Poetry of Resilience will be preceded by the NYC premiere of Jim Varga's Beyond Assignment, a film exploring the approaches and personalities of three photographers as they work on longterm projects in their respective countries of Mexico, South Africa and Israel. That they are women should not matter, at the same time it is extremely important.

Please join us for these two emotionally powerful films. Both filmmakers will be in attendance for a Q&A following the screening. For more information and tickets for the MAY 9th screening, please click here.

SOHO HOUSE FUNDRAISER RECAP

The 2012 WFF & HVFC Soho House Benefit was a great event with a screening of the terrific film
Peace, Love & Misunderstanding
(opening June 8 in theaters) courtesy of IFC Films.

The evening started off with an introduction by WFF Executive Director Meira Blaustein on the improvements at the Film Center at 13 Rock City Rd and the work that still needs to be done. She then introduced BCDF’s Claude Dal Farra, PLM’s writing team Joe Muszynski and Christina Mengert and one of the young stars of the film Nat Wolff. After the film wrapped a Q&A was led by Meira where Claude described how director Bruce Beresford came to the project and Nat recounted working with Jane Fonda whom he said quickly became like his “grandma” and humbly detailed his latest roles in a pair of upcoming blockbuster films, working alongside stars like Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Jennifer Connelly. After the Q&A session had wrapped everyone retired to the Soho House White Room to discuss the picture over a glass of wine.

The event gave a boost to our Capital Campaign but we still need your help to make improvements including a new paint job, roof, heating for the Markertek Screening Room and renovating the upstairs deck.

Thanks to all who came out to support WFF & HVFC and there is still time to give to the Capital Campaign. Please consider making a tax deductible contribution. CLICK HERE for details about benefits and perks or enter your donation amount directly through paypal.

Perfect Sense- on DVD & BLURAY 5/22

Eva Green and Ewan McGregor burn up the screen in this romantic sci-fi, drama set in the near future where humans begin to lose their senses one by one. McGregor plays Michael, the chef of a posh restaurant who must compensate for each successive loss of sense to keep customers coming out. Meanwhile he falls for the beautiful Susan, a scientist attempting to cure the epidemic sweeping the globe and as the world crumbles the two cling to each other. "Is this because they are falling in love or is it because the world is falling apart? Directed by David Mackenzie, Perfect Sense is a life-affirming look at what it means to love and be loved in turbulent times, Perfect Sense is a chilly parable, a genre-busting poetic sci-fi film, rich in haunting ideas and imagery." 96 Minutes- on DVD 5/29

In a single shocking act, four young lives are irrevocably changed. Thrillingly told and directed by Aimee Lagos in an interlocking structure, 96 Minutes centers around Dre, a precocious student on his way to university. Still tied to his violent neighborhood, Dre attempts to show his troubled friend, Kevin, other possibilities in life. On the other side are Carley and Lena, two smart and beautiful soon-to-be college graduates out for a night of fun, who find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. In an instant, the four collide in a dreadful scenario with an acutely uncertain outcome. With incredible performances by a multicultural cast, this spellbinding and riveting moral tale deftly touches on the issues of race, class, friendship and our connections to the past. And that no matter how small the choice may be, it can change our lives forever.
