  2012 ELECTION CONCLUDES

We are all very happy that the elections are behind us and we can all breathe a sign of relief that all the commercials, political debates and campaign spending (totaling billions of dollars) is over with.

President Obama won his bid for re-election. Some new elected officials will join returning congress men and women, senators, state & county officials, and we sincerely hope that they will all work together to keep America, the great country that it is.

  HURRICANE SANDY RELIEF EFFORTS
red cross

After a devastating blow to the East Coast last week, residents of the tri-state area are still picking up the pieces and trying to recover after Hurricane Sandy wiped out many homes, businesses, beaches, roads and adversely affected the lives of so many.

While the Hudson Valley is very lucky to have fared better than most areas, there are still many that need help. To donate to the Red Cross's efforts you can visit www.redcross.org, call 1-800-HELP-NOW, text REDCROSS to 90999 to make a donation of $10 or visit itunes.com/redcross to make a doantion of any amount.

Help is also needed in the form of perishable food items, supplies for warmth as well as hygene. There are many doantion drop off locations all throughout the Hudson Valley, so make sure to contact your local town to find out where they are.

If you are interested in taking a trip down to most effected areas such as Staten Island, the Rockaways or the Jersey Shore, they are in need of all the aid they can get. We must pull together during times like these and help one another out the best we can.

California Solo - November 30 (NY & LA)

*2012 WFF Best Narrative and Editing winner

When you reach the top, is there anywhere to go but down? Former Britpop rock star Lachlan MacAldonich, in a sublime performance by Robert Carlyle, finds himself at this precipice as a once promising music career is now awash in booze and self- loathing. Director Marshall Lewy’s, sophomore effort is a moving departure from his feature debut, the comedy Blue State as Lachlan, now a farm manager in southern California, faces deportation after another ill-fated night of drinking and driving. Now in an effort to stave off expulsion from the U.S. he must reconnect with his ex-wife and the daughter he barely knows and finally face the demons he has been avoiding to reclaim a life teetering on the edge.

Chasing Ice - November 16 (Limited)

*2012 WFF Official Selection

Photographer James Balog has been reshaping how we see the environment through his photography for over 30 years, shooting for top magazines like National Geographic. However in 2007 Balog became more directly involved with environmental activism, creating the Extreme Ice Survey (EIS) after years of photographing glaciers and witnessing the rapidly vanishing ice sheets across the globe. In Jeff Orlowski’s feature debut, we see in vivid detail the results of the years of photographic research the EIS has compiled, dramatically depicting the effect global warming is having on the world’s biggest glaciers.

Mea Maxima Culpa: Silence in the House of God - November 16

*2012 WFF Official Selection

Oscar-winning filmmaker Alex Gibney exposes the abuse of power in the Catholic Church and a cover-up that winds its way from the row houses of Milwaukee Wisconsin, through the bare ruined choirs of Ireland's churches all the way to the highest office of the Vatican. By investigating the secret crimes of a charismatic priest who abused over 200 deaf children in a school under his control - the film shows the face of evil that lurks behind the smiles and denials of authority figures and institutions who believe that because they stand for good they can do no wrong.

  HUDSON VALLEY FILM COMMISSION NEWS

Sisterhood of the Night picked up feature film production in the Hudson Valley right where the Terence Malick production of The Green Blade Rises (starring Wes Bentley and Diane Kruger) ended — with a thirst for great locations, professional SAG actors, hundreds of extras, and experienced local crew members.

Sisterhood of the Night stars Kal Penn (Kumar from Harold & Kumar), Kara Hayward (Moonrise Kingdom) and Georgie Henley (Narnia films). When the high school's gossip girl exposes a secret society called The Sisterhood of Night, the quiet town of Fairview is thrown into the public eye and blogosphere. What follows is a chronicle of three girls' unique and provocative alternative to the complexities of the digital abyss.

In addition to lending a hand with the above mentioned, HVFC is currently helping potential productions by Disney, SONY and Mockingbird Pictures. For more info about HVFC, visit Hudson Valley Film Commission.
