Grammy Award-Winner Bela Fleck & Renowned Bassist Edgar Meyer to Perform at 5th Anniversary Woodstock Film Festival Kick-Off Concert at Bard College’s Fisher Center, October 13th
(Woodstock, NY) September 1, 2004: The Woodstock Film Festival is pleased to announce that seven-time Grammy award-winner Bela Fleck will kick-off the 5th Annual Woodstock Film Festival with an evening of acoustic music with renowned bassist Edgar Meyer at The Richard B. Fisher Center for the Performing Arts at Bard College, Annandale -On-Hudson, Wednesday, October 13, 2004 at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets go on sale Tuesday, September 7, 2004 and can be purchased by calling The Fisher Center box office at (845) 758-7900. The box office is open from 10:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday. Tickets are also available online at the Fisher.
Bela Fleck is considered to be the world’s foremost virtuoso banjo player and is the only musician to be nominated for Grammys in jazz, bluegrass, classical, pop, country, spoken word, composition and world music categories.
The evening's program will include original works by Fleck and Meyer, as well as classical selections, including pieces from the duo’s recently released critically acclaimed album Music for Two and Fleck's multiple Grammy Award-winning recording, Perpetual Motion. The evening will not only offer the three B’s: Bach, Banjo and Bass, but also selections of jazz, baroque, and bluegrass.
Bela Fleck and Edgar Meyer have been friends and colleagues for more than 20 years. A documentary about the Fleck/Meyer partnership, Obstinato: Making Music for Two, will be featured during The Woodstock Film Festival. The movie was shot on the road during the first leg of their tour by filmmaker Sascha Paladino, who is Fleck’s brother.
The Frank Gehry-designed Fisher Center was chosen as the site of the opening WFF concert because its innovative design provides audiences with a world-class environment that inspires risk-taking performances and provocative programs, a hallmark of the Fleck/Meyer/WFF collaboration.
The ‘fiercely independent’ Woodstock Film Festival celebrates its 5th Anniversary in 2004, from Wednesday, October 13 through Sunday, October 17. More than 120 films, panels, seminars, concerts and special events will be featured at venues in Woodstock, Rhinebeck and Hunter. Any world-class musician born with the names Bela (for Bartok), Anton (for Dvorak) and Leos (for Janacek) would seem destined to play classical music. Already a powerfully creative force in bluegrass, jazz, pop, rock and world beat, the pioneering banjo virtuoso and bandleader is perhaps best known at the helm of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, a group he formed in 1989. The music was dubbed "blu-bop" – a ground-breaking mix of jazz and bluegrass, and the group quickly became a commercially successful, critically acclaimed, award-winning band. Fleck made the classical connection with his album Perpetual Motion, which won two Grammys including Best Classical Crossover Album and Best Instrumental Arrangement (which Fleck shared with Meyer).
About Edgar Meyer
Prominently established as a unique and masterful instrumentalist, Edgar Meyer combines unparalled technique and musicianship with a gift for composition. In recognition of his unique place in the world of music, the MacArthur Foundation named him one of the 2002 recipients of its prestigious “genius” grants. Meyer began studying bass at the age of five under the instruction of his father, and continued his studies with Stuart Sankey. In 1994 he became the only bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Career Grant and in 2000 became the only bassist to receive the Avery Fisher Prize.
