Artist and activist Manuel Oliver with Marjory Stoneman Douglas High student Tyra Hemans

"The fact that this has happened so much, that school shootings have happened so much, to the point that we need drills for them almost as often as fire drills is unacceptable."
-David Hogg, film subject and March for Our Lives activist

(USA / 2019 / 90 minutes)

On February 14, 2018, a lone shooter opened fire on a Florida high school. In a fight that has become epic, the survivors of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School massacre have responded with defiance, eloquence and bravery. Parkland Rising follows these remarkable young people and the parents of the victims as they take on those responsible for the lack of gun control laws: Politicians who accept gun lobby money, gun manufacturers and the National Rifle Association.

With unparalleled access, the filmmakers share the personal stories of these fierce leaders as they raise their voices in an effort to prevent more mass shootings. Focusing largely on student activist David Hogg and artist Manuel Oliver, grieving father of slain Joaquin Oliver, this is their journey over nine defining months as they channel their anger into action and engage in a valiant battle of wills with the gun lobby. Alternately heartbreaking and life-affirming Parkland Rising should be seen by every American.

Widely acknowledged as one of the premiere independent film festivals in the U.S, the Woodstock Film Festival was founded in 2000 by filmmakers Meira Blaustein and Laurent Rejto, as a grassroots arts organization inspired by the love of film and community. Its special 20th Anniversary festival will be celebrated Wednesday through Sunday, October 2nd - 6th, 2019, in Woodstock, Saugerties, Rosendale, Kingston and Rhinebeck, NY. For more than two decades, the festival has brought together thousands of filmmakers, film lovers, artists and musicians, through the annual festival and outstanding year-round programming. The festival’s year-round programming includes premiere screenings, filmmaking panels, screenwriting workshops, youth film lab, and outstanding special events in New York's Hudson River Valley region.

The Woodstock Film Festival showcases passionate, creative and thought-provoking work by some of today's most promising and accomplished independent filmmakers from all over the world.
